SAU Tennis Beats IWU

The SAU men's tennis team dominated against IWU.

What a beautiful day to host some tennis matches at Spring Arbor University! The sun was shining, there was a cool breeze, and the SAU men’s tennis team definitely brought their A-game today. These particular matches held some bittersweet emotions for me because Spring Arbor University played Indiana Wesleyan University (my previous school). However, I am proud to say that I was cheering for the COUGARS! This was my first time cheering for Spring Arbor rather than Indiana Wesleyan, and I am so proud of our men’s tennis team!

Spring Arbor University brought home the win after today’s matches. Our 1st – 3rd Doubles teams won with scores of 8-1, 8-4, and 8-6 respectively. Also, our top three Singles players (David Darling, Thomas Calderone, and Aaron Mayes) won within their first 2 games. Way to represent SAU! Keep up the good work!

Even though we won based on points, we also won in regards to sportsmanship. During the doubles matches, I noticed that our players would often come together, high-five, or encourage each other between points. They were respectful to the Indiana Wesleyan tennis team and maintained Christ-like attitudes. Our tennis team also had a lot of support behind them. The head tennis coach, Terry Darling, regularly made his way around the different courts and encouraged all of his players. Ron Kopiko, the SAU chaplain, also came out to support our tennis guys! And let’s not forget the supportive students! Among the athletes’ family members, many of our students came to cheer on the Cougars. So come out to the next tennis match here on campus and continue to support our amazing tennis team!

Bay Shore routine: Jesus, fun, Interlude?

20 July 2011 ~ Comments Off

At Bay Shore, we had the opportunity to be there with another college team. Revolution, a ministry team from Indiana Wesleyan, was there to provide the worship for the week! Melissa and I have run into IWU teams twice already, so it was great to meet even more students from that school. When we were at Chenaniah, we had been introduced to the “Interlude,” a dance that is famous on IWU’s campus. After Revolution introduced it at Bay Shore, the campers absolutely loved it and wanted to do it every minute of every day. No joke! It was a lot of fun – check out the video to see how much it was enjoyed. Personally, I think SAU needs a dance like this!

A great experience at Chenaniah

We worked with some awesome people this week!

We are officially “over the hump”! Melissa and I made it through week 4, which was spent at Camp Chenaniah in Honor, MI. This camp was rather “rustic” as our boss likes to say, but it is a wonderful place to grow, serve, and have fun. There were only about 25 kids there, ages 7-17, and Melissa and I were counselors in the senior high girls’ dorm. Along with being counselors, we also led game time at night and were able to tell the kids how AWESOME Spring Arbor is!

We were there with two other college teams, Indiana Wesleyan and Southern Wesleyan. It was great interacting with other college students again, and I’m excited to keep in touch with them even after we’ve said goodbye. One way in which I’ve been growing this summer is learning how to appreciate the people in my life, even if I’m only with them for a short time. A difficulty in this job is attaching yourself to a person, a staff, or an entire camp atmosphere and then having to say goodbye after less than a week. When talking to Melissa about it after the second week, she felt herself starting to build a wall when we walked into camp #3 because she didn’t want to be hurt from having to leave those people once the week was up. We’ve both come to realize, however, that we can’t harden ourselves to the beautiful opportunities God has given us, even if we can only experience them for a short time. Ever since we decided to be open and welcome whatever relationships God has brought our way, I know we have both been refreshed and overfilled with joy because of what these new friends mean to us :).

A Loss to IWU…Sucks!

28 February 2011 ~ Comments Off

Howdy Cougars! Indiana Wesleyan was next in line for our men’s basketball team to play in the MCC tournament.

IWU was the number one seed, where as our Cougars were number five. This game could have been a huge upset and I know that’s the outcome that I would have prefered than the loss that the Cougars suffered.

Their tournament ended on Saturday and I was devastated. The boys lost 76-72. It was a close game, it just wasn’t enough. I hate it when that happens.

It sucks knowing that you play really, really hard, yet you can’t come out with a win. I never like being in those situations. It was such a close game and it definitely could have gone either way.

The seniors, DJ Baisden and Willie Pickvet, both played really well, with Baisden leading all scorers with 25 points. Pickvet had a total of 19 points. It’s hard knowing that these two won’t be there to lead the team next year.

I guess that means the underclassmen are going to have to step up. They definitely stepped it up for the Huntington game and I can’t wait to see what they do for the next year. I love going to basketball games and I am looking forward to seeing a new team mesh together.

We’re just waiting on the news of where the boys will be playing again, there are two more options for tournaments that they could be playing in, so I think that you should stay tuned.

Catch ya later, Cougs!

Pretty in Pink

Cougars lost in a tough battle against IWU, but dedicated their game to Breast Cancer Awareness.

Today, the Women’s Soccer team got dolled up in pink! Just kidding, however, they did wear pink jerseys to support Breast Cancer Awareness. I came out to the game, slightly ashamed because I owned nothing that was pink in my entire wardrobe, and watched the girls play. Our lady Cougars were taking on what is possibly Spring Arbor’s biggest rival, Indiana Wesleyan University. I like rivalry –sometimes the games are more exciting because of it. When the two teams play in a game devoted to a serious cause like Breast Cancer however, the rivalry stops for a moment and people come together to celebrate life, mourn loss, and try to raise find for a cure.

I remember the “pink out” game my team played in last year at Huntington University. It was so beautiful to see how many survivors and their families showed up to the game to participate in a halftime dedication. Even my teammate’s mom was one of the many survivors. I thank God for all of the survivors who are dedicated to spreading awareness and raising money to find a cure. Now I’m anxiously waiting for Spring Arbor’s next pink out. I hope you come out and support.

Think Pink for Breast Cancer

29 September 2010 ~ Comments Off

The Lady Cougars in their pink jerseys.

Hey Cougs! The women’s soccer team had a “Pink Out” for their first home game since the start school.

The game was against Indiana Wesleyan, the lady Cougars’ division rival. Unfortunately, the girls lost 2-1, but the game was exciting and there were lots of people there supporting the cause.

Wanna know how they raised their support? They sold t-shirts for $10 and there was an entrance fee. It was $4 for adults and $2 for students if they didn’t have their IDs with them.

The money that they raised went to the Vera Bradley Foundation for Cancer Research.

The girls even got to wear pink jerseys instead of the normal white ones for home games.

Most people know someone that has been touched by cancer, whether it be breast cancer or not, but the month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I suggest you go out and buy something pink, wear it and think of your mum. It might even show her just how thankful you are to have her in your life.

So, guys, rock a pink t-shirt and, gals, die a small section of your hair pink (not permanently of course) and show your support for the cause.

Catch ya later Cougs!
