The Library = Social Life

21 February 2013 ~ Comments Off

Three words that come to my mind when I think of the Library: Starbucks, Homework and Socializing. I am currently sitting here drinking a Caramel Macchiato, doing my homework with my bro while listening to John Mayer. If that is not quality, I do not know what is. Sacred Grounds, which is the Starbucks coffee shop on campus, is located on the main floor of the White Library . What would a library be without coffee? Not to mention they make some killer drinks. I wish I could afford coffee everyday. But for today anyways, I will enjoy the treat of a free coffee coupon.

It is ironic that I often come to the library to do homework and end up spending more time socializing than doing my work. I am not sure exactly why this place has become such a hub for student interaction—probably because the average SAU student spends a good deal of time here doing homework and it is just easier to socialize here than leave to go somewhere else. That is not saying that no homework gets done here, because I definitely do that as well, but I am just not always productive with my time.

Note that it is also a great place to hang out with that special guy or girl without making it a big deal because you are just doing “homework.” I will admit I have been guilty of coming to the library purely to hang out with females, but that is another story….. Regardless, this is one of my favorite places on campus and I spend a lot of time here. It is the place to be during the day, which sounds weird, but it is the truth.

Spring Semester

29 January 2013 ~ Comments Off

Well, spring semester swiftly graced us with its presence. It is that time of the year again when students are scrambling through the yard to get to class, trying to grab a quick bite to eat before getting to work on homework, and filling up the desk in the library for study groups and other assignments. I am really looking forward to this semester. For the most part, the start of this semester has been pretty light for me. I am able to adequately manage my time and get everything done in an expedite fashion while still being able to chill with my friends from time to time. This semester is one that will be very interesting for me to say the least. Due to the fact that I am a Criminal Justice major, most of my classes focus on various aspects of the law in and of itself. This is helping me not only look forward to junior year, but also applying for law school. I know that this semester will be great for everyone. It’s time to get back to the grind and start, as well as finish, strong. I wish everyone a wonderful semester! I know that for me, this will be the best one yet.

Quiet Floor

Sitting in silence on the Quiet Floor at the library.

Sitting in silence on the Quiet Floor at the library.

Welcome to my home away from home… the Quiet Floor in the Hugh and Edna White Library. This is where I will be spending most of my time this semester. When I initially arrived at Spring Arbor University for the fall semester, I greatly underestimated the amount of homework, studying, and research I would have as a senior psychology major.

One of the reasons I love the library at SAU is because it accommodates every student for whatever they need to do. The main floor of the library is the “indoor-voice talking zone.” Students can come work at the tables in groups, meet up with friends, talk about classes (or life outside of class), and socialize. There are also rows of computers available for students to do research on the internet and print their papers and assignments. In the corner of the library, we have a coffee shop called Sacred Grounds. Here, they sell Starbucks coffee and drinks – the perfect addition for late night studying.

When you reach the top of the stairs, you arrive at my favorite place in the whole library: the Quiet Floor. There are tons of resources and reference books, as well as lit tables to use to study and complete homework… and you’re not allowed to talk, scream, or shout (sometimes, whispering is okay… if it’s short!) There are few distractions, and I can easily get into “homework mode” when I’m here.  If you find it hard to study in your room or in the lounge, give the Quiet Floor a try! You may be pleasantly surprised at your increased productivity.

3 Weeks and Counting

12 April 2012 ~ Comments Off

Full library, printers constantly running, students hurrying, projects due, study group, test after test after test!!!!! This is the atmosphere of a campus filled with students who only have three weeks of classes left. Since my return from Easter break my ears have been buzzing about the “x” amount of days left until the semester is over. Everyone seems to be excited at the fact that summer break is quickly approaching. However, in the meantime, everyone is studiously doing their best to get homework completed, text books read and projects finished. Although I am geeked about the summer approaching, I am also sad that I have to leave my old and new friends behind. I always see the library full but not as packed as I have seen it these last couple days. Everyone is scrambling trying to make sure papers are written correctly, edited, and homework turned in promptly. I must admit, I am excited about the many opportunities that I will be pursuing this summer and I get to spend time with my family and friends back at home. I’m sure that everyone will have a wonderful summer, but until then, there is work to do. =)

Finish Strong!!!

In the Library!

28 September 2011 ~ Comments Off

Today has been a wonderful day for me. This morning I went to SPA 101, and then made my way to chapel. As I walked back to my room thinking that I was going to get some rest, I remembered that it would be a smart idea to work on my homework and study for the rest of the day until my night class at 6:30. So, today has been one of those days where I’ve been in the library for about 3 hours glued to the computer screen and my books. I can’t complain about it, because I got a lot done. I love staying ahead of the game and with all the free time I had today, I couldn’t turn down that opportunity. Even though taking a 2 hour nap can be really tempting, I believe it’s always best to just handle business and get things done. In doing so, I have the opportunity to draft, edit, scribble down ideas, and make sure my assignments are done to the best of my ability. As much as some people opt to stay away from the library, you will come to find out that sooner or later the library becomes your second home. Needless to say, I’ve actually come to the conclusion that I love working in the library. I get way more accomplished than sitting in my room next to my comfortable bed. LOL! Not saying that working in the room is bad, it just solely depends on personal preference. Well I’m about to finish studying and do my last assignment!

Weekend Chronicles

Snacks, homework, and fun!

I cannot explain how overjoyed I am that the weekend has finally arrived. I had a wonderful week, but it seems like the weekend came quickly around the corner. I’m excited because I plan on eating, sleeping, enjoying friends, and getting some early studying and homework done. I think every college student always looks forward to every Friday, because we know that we can just chill and relax for a while until Monday rolls back around then it’s back to business as usual. I have an early morning class every Friday so my weekend actually begins at 9:55 am and I absolutely LOVE IT! After my class, I routinely go to the library to finish homework due the following week. I then make a trip to the DC (I love food) and eat with friends. From there, I try to relax and just enjoy the rest of my day. I enjoy my weekends. There is always someone who will play a good board game, or watch a movie with you. Who wouldn’t enjoy that? Especially when you do those things with your closest friends, a floor mate, your R.A, S.L.A, or just a group of people who enjoy having fun with you. I hope that everyone enjoys the weekend. Whether you’re visiting home, staying on campus, or visiting a friend, enjoy every moment of it.

It’s the Weekend! Be Blessed and Have a Great One!
